ARAMAKI Teiichi - Kyoto has flourished as a city blessed with scenic beauty, and its value has been raised by our predecessors' ceaseless efforts. The traditional culture of Kyoto has been continued into the present age. We can make the best use of it as a worthy contribution to society by stimulating scientific and social development, and pursuing a sense of presence and humanity. It is the giving of every effort that brings us new culture.
THE MUSEUM OF KYOTO was designed as a general cultural facility. The purpose is to introduce the culture of Kyoto, how it came into existence and developed as various ways of expressions, and to hand on the power of creating new culture.
The Permanent Exhibition has three sections: 1)a historical museum introducing history and culture, 2) an art gallery displaying works of painters of Japanese painting and Western painting, sculptors and artisans associated with Kyoto, and 3) a hall for showing films associated with Kyoto. We also hold Special Exhibitions, giving unique and fascinating displays on many different topics.
The former Bank of Japan-Kyoto Branch now stands as the symbol of THE MUSEUM OF KYOTO and is open to the public. It was built in the Meiji era, and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. In addition, artists and groups put their works on show in a special gallery space. You can enjoy shopping and dining in Mercantile Street "Roji Tmepo", where we have reproduced a scene typical of streets and houses of Kyoto in the latter part of the Edo era. We believe you will have a fascinating time here.
THE MUSEUM OF KYOTO plays an initiative role in introducing the culture of Kyoto. We are looking forward to your visit.
